The Difference Between a Pool Table and a Snooker Table

A pool table is a type of billiards table with 6 pockets and typically range in size from 6 to 9 feet long. A quality pool table will have a slate bed covered in either wool or acrylic/nylon with 15 numbered balls. There are a number of different pool games including Straight Pool, 8-Ball and One Pocket. Any pool table that is twice as long as it is wide (for example: 8ft x 4ft) is considered a regulation table.

From a distance, a snooker table may be mistaken for a pool table, but as you get closer you will notice some fundamental differences. For one thing, a professional size snooker table is much bigger than a pool table. A tournament-size snooker table is 12ft x 6ft while even the largest pool tables are "only" 9ft. But that's not the only difference.

Snooker requires 22 balls (as opposed to 15 for pool) and those balls are 2 1/16 inch in diameter, while pool balls are either 2 inches or 2 1/4 inches. 6 of those balls must be blue, brown, green, yellow, pink and black. While 15 are solid red and there is one white “striker” ball.

Some other differences between a pool table and snooker table include:

  • Cushion Shape: Snooker cushions are typically L-shaped while pool cushions are usually more angled.
  • Number of Markings: A snooker table has more markings than a pool table, including a D at the head of the table.
  • Covering Material: Snooker table coverings are typically 90% wool, while pool table coverings may be nylon.
  • Cue Type: Snooker cues typically have a shorter tip of 9.5mm as opposed to the 13mm pool tip.
